Oh, and he also hates both 'Big B' and 'Bollywood' Excerpts from a voluminous discourse:

India's a grand narrative
I stand before you famous for being a foil - not for what I've done of my own authorship. I'm famous for characters, not the character. That given, many of my characters have indeed been epic, and that's India for you. A grand narrative of big leaders, big movements, big argument, big drama, big passion, big suffering, big overcoming. The only big the media insists I have contributed to this great nation is a rather an overly persistent B - the homemade epithet much to my dislike, the Big B... To entertain - it is a rich and complex act - 'to amuse, divert, attract, to consider, contemplate, hold in mind, to receive, to harbour others in generosity of spirit'. Entertain: inter - among, tenere - to hold. And we hold among ourselves, blessed with a story - 'storytelling conveys meaning without committing the error of defining it'. True entertainers aren't denotative or didactic - we don't give you answers. We certainly don't give lectures.

Films are popular passion of India
Our nation has somehow, before our post-independence eyes, invented the most successful form of entertainment ever devised by humanity - by sheer number of viewers that is. Feature films are the great popular passion of India, cutting across all social divides of caste, class, gender, region, religion and language. They absorbed all other performing arts from here and abroad, and churned. Urdu and Tamil, poets, scriptwriters; Carnatic ragas, blues and jazz and folk; and churned. The Indian film industry absorbed Parsis, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Christians, Sikhs, and churned. It absorbed Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Assamese, Odiya, so many others, and churned. And all our gods and demons out of the sea have made an extraordinary masala by their churning. This filmi nectar is an ambrosia so intoxicating, that it has achieved what no Indian politician has ever done, could ever dream of. In our cinema, the bad guys always come to no good.

Trashy hocus- pocus
Indian cinema doesn't have a nuclear bomb, it never suffers a recession. How easily it is dismissed as - and here's a word I just hate using - 'Bollywood'. Degenerate, trivial, trashy, flashy hocus-pocus. Because, 'you see the whole country of this system is juxtaposition by the haemoglobin in the atmosphere because you are a sophisticated rhetorician intoxicated by the exuberance of your own verbosity'. Trashy hocus-pocus!

Cinema respects no borders
Our post-independence cinema played centre-stage creating Nehru's vision of India, where both cinema, elitism and populism produced a new sense of distinction and a collective imagination. What it does... is that it unites an entire people. And it goes beyond that - our cinema respects no national borders. It unites peoples.

Smriti and Sruti
Perhaps I too may have missed a point in the past when bored watching an Indian film, I felt the absurdity of seemingly dislocated elements and then suddenly flew into a rage - why? What on earth is this song about? What does it have to do with the plot? What's it doing here now? But as I reconsider what I see... I have to ask myself that whether, counter-intuitively, it's about something wiser. Perhaps it is wiser than the director, the screenwriter, the actor and the audience. We all know how Indian epic narrative is interspersed with non-narrative spectacularepisodic song. But what about this - it most extraordinarily mirrors our two-fold tradition in ancient Hindu scripture - of smriti, that of remembered, and sruti, that which is revealed. Smriti, the epic narrative tradition of our sacred texts, now speaks to us anew in our overblown film plots. That which is remembered, re-echoed again from memory into recognisable voices. And then the sudden bursts of intermission - non-narrative songs from nowhere. Yes, they are moments of pure sruti.

Why is suffering more real than joy
A successful film director of the 70s once said, 'I want people to forget their misery. I want to take them into a dream world where there is no poverty, where fate is kind and God is busy looking after his flock.' But why do we presume that it is only through daily suffering that we come to understand these truths? This is what most of us really think, isn't it? Why? What really are we doing when we call our cinema escapist and mere fantasy? I suspect our modern affair with realism is like any other ism - just another overcompensation of ideology. Why exactly does the real, just as confected as any other idea of ours, embody more truth about the human condition than the ideal? Particularly when these very realistic films are being made by perfectly unfamished, middle-class Indians? Why is suffering more real than joy or pleasure? Isn't this a rather puritanical, reified, literalist and simplistic position? Isn't it a bit self-indulgent of us from our position of comfort? Isn't it ultimately offensive towards those that suffer? Why won't we more hear them speak for themselves?

Interes-tingly, this time my hero, Shahid, is someone who has not played macho roles. To direct him in an action entertainer was even more challenging. The film needed an actor never seen before in a full-fledged action avatar and I felt that Shahid was perfect to essay that character. My films have all the ingredients — love, dance, romance, drama, comedy — because we Indians love seeing these emotions on screen. Were you upset?
Just the other day, Shahid was watching Sylvestor Stallone's Rocky V and I asked him to change the channel. I also told Shahid, 'When you go to America, don't meet Stallone'!

Why did you decide on Shahid and Sonakshi for this film?
We needed a new couple. His choreography is very different. While shooting, he saw the monitor and told me, 'Arre, how much energy you've got!'

One doesn't see you doing too many action films. How did R...Rajkumar happen?
Prabhu sir saw Kaminey and felt that I could do an action film. He has worked with Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan in the past, who are established action heroes. I was lucky that he thought of me in that space. I love the kind of action he does — there are no superpowers or bikes or cars, just hand-to-hand combat.

Prabhu, this is the first time that you are making a Bollywood film which is not a remake of a South film. How different was this experience?
For me, it's not difficult because I have worked in South too. I started with remakes here, now the actors and producers have accepted me. Whether it's a remake or not, it's the same effort, similar energy is put in.

Overall, some people do feel that the whole South remake trend in Bollywood is losing it's charm...
I don't think so.
Shahid: Also, the biggest grosser this year has been Chennai Express.

Sonakshi, who do you make a good screen pair with?
I think I look best with Shahid, Akshay and Salman.

Shahid, people loved your pairing with Kareena in Jab We Met. Who do you both think you look best with?
Kareena and I looked really bad together in our first couple of films. Jab We Met was just a really good film... the characters worked and people remember that. Besides Sonakshi, I like my pairing with Amrita (Rao), Priyanka (Chopra) and Kareena (Kapoor Khan).

In R...Rajkumar, the two of you take friendly digs at each other (Shahid mocks Sona's weight and she mocks his height). Do these 'imperfections' subconsciously affect you'll in real life?
Shahid: Subconsciously, I feel I am perfect. No seriously, once you become an actor, it's a constant process of improving yourself and also making people love you for who you are. The minute you start being somebody you are not, people sense that and lose that connect they have with you. Look at our biggest superstars. None of them are perfect looking or have the perfect height etc. People love them because they are themselves and they are out there entertaining the audience to the best of their abilities.
Sonakshi: He has summed it up perfectly. I have never tried to be perfect right from my first film.

Shahid, on the personal front, are you single as reported? Are you open to an arranged marriage?
Yes, I am reportedly single! Also, every marriage is arranged only. When you fall in love, you have to arrange things before you get married. On a serious note, I don't think so much about marriage. I have not reached that point where I have fallen in love with somebody and am ready to settle down. Men, unlike women, do not grow up wanting to get married. They think more about how many girlfriends they'll have, parties they'll attend... there's a difference in the psyche. We don't think about marriage until we reach that point where boss, abhi toh sochna padega hi padega.

You have become quite reserved of late when it comes to talking about your love life...
I grew up and got smart!

It was said that you are a rigid boyfriend...
Who told you this? Has to be an ex. Sour grapes, madam (smiles).

Sonakshi, what's your take on marriage?
When I was 16, I would say, when I grow up, I want to be married with two children. As I am reaching that stage, I find myself evading it. I am so involved with my work that.. aise kisisey bhi nahi karne wali shaadi, aise haar nahi dalungi.

Prabhu, how are you as a director? Do you miss acting?
If you are asking me, I'll say I'm the best (laughs). What else can I say?
Sonakshi: He is a taskmaster, but it's fun working with him that it just doesn't feel like he's being strict. The space his films are in is so much fun. He makes life simple for us actors by enacting every scene for us.
Shahid: He enacts each scene for us.

Prabhu, Shahid says you tell him to talk less. But don't you think you talk very little?
Yes. (Shahid jumps in saying, 'Tell the truth sir, we travelled together in the car yesterday. Sonakshi adds, 'We were sitting behind you and sir, you spoke for an hour in Tamil on your phone.)

Finally, tell us one 'gandi baat' about each other...
Sonakshi: Shahid talks too much!
Shahid: Sonakshi is a bit hypersensitive. The other gandi baat is that she is too punctual... she reaches half an hour before the scheduled time. As a result, people who come on time feel they are late. That is really annoying.
