With 11 more people drowning, the death toll in the current floods has gone up to 38 in Purnia and Kosi divisions of north-east Bihar.
PURNIA: With 11 more people drowning, nine in Katihar's extremely flood-prone Barsoi sub-division and two in Baisi sub-division in Purnia, the death toll in the current floods has gone up to 38 in Purnia and Kosi divisions of north-east Bihar.
In Katihar division, four people drowned at Shivanandnagar, Bansgaon, Abadpur and Bitwapur under Barsoi block, two more casualties took place at Kumaripur, one at Chunwa under Kadwa block and two more in Balrampur block on Monday. They were drowned in the swollen Mahananda and Nagar rivers, according to Barsoi SDO Mahendra Paul.
In Purnia's Buwari and Lasanpur panchayats in Baisi sub-division, two people met their watery grave when they were drowned in the swollen Mahananda and Parman rivers, taking the toll in Purnia district alone to 16, according to Baisi SDO Sanjay Kumar.
Barsoi SDO told TOI on Tuesday that the kin of the bereaved families were already given relief of Rs 1,500 each for burial under the "Kabir Antyesti" scheme. Since many of these people were reluctant to opt for post-mortem on religious grounds, it was difficult to pay them the mandatory compensatory relief of Rs 1,50,000 each, he said.
Meanwhile, attempts on part of dozens of villagers, who forcibly wanted to cut the Azamnagar-Kadwa ring 'bundh' so that flood water could flow out and relieve the pressure on their villages were aborted after they were engaged in parleys and assurances were given around midnight on Monday.
Had they succeeded in breaching the Azamnagar-Kadwa ring bundh, more than 52 panchayats on the other side of the bundh would have been engulfed by surging waters of the swollen Mahananda, he said.
Though Ganga was flowing above the danger level at Karhagola, it was below danger mark at Ramayanpur. Mahananda, though on a climbdown, continues to flow above the danger mark. The embankments are, however, quite safe at present, according to Mahananda division water resource department superintending engineer Siya Ram Paswan.
The discharge level of Kosi at Bhimnagar, near Birpur and Barahkshetra in Nepal, had marginally surged to 1,45,855 and 98,150 cusecs respectively at 12 noon on Tuesday after remaining at 1,28,965 and 94,775 cusecs respectively at the same time on Monday.
