NEW DELHI: Congress on Tuesday slammed Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi for Rs 5 'registration' fee for public meeting in Hyderabad, accusing the saffron party for "monetizing democracy" by collecting a "listening tax".
Information & broadcasting minister Manish Tewari sarcastically said the Rs 5 fee showed the "true value" of Modi.
"Baba Pravachan Ticket Rs 100-100,000. Cinema ticket Rs. 200-500 even for box office flop. Ticket to hear a CM Rs 5. Market discovers true value," Tewari said.
Sharpening his attack on the BJP strongman, Tewari said, "BJP's listening Tax Rs 5 maybe market discovery price. What would be speaking Tax imposed on 1.2 billion? Monetizing democracy/pure fascism!"
Congress's attack came a day after the party took on Modi for "burqa (veil) of secularism" comment targeting the ruling party.
The ruling party, which shied away from targeting Modi arguing he is a state leader and would be countered by Congress leaders in Gujarat, seems to have changed the strategy as most of the senior leaders are fielded to counter the Gujarat CM these days.
