CAIRO: Egypt's interim-government on Tuesday allowed an EU envoy to meet deposed president Mohamed Morsi — his first contact with the outside world since he was toppled in a military-backed coup on July 3.
European Union's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she met the ousted Islamist president on Monday night and he was in good health.
"We talked for two hours, we talked in depth," she said. "He has access to information in terms of TV and newspapers , so we were able to talk about the situation, and we were able to talk about the need to move forward."
Ashton said she was flown in a military helicopter to her meeting and was able to see the facilities where Morsi is being held, but she does not know his location.
Ashton is one of several world leaders calling for a compromise between the military-backed interim government and the Muslim Brotherhood. More than 200 people have died in violent clashes across Egypt since Morsi was ousted.
But, Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehad el-Haddad said there will be no compromise.
"There is only one way for this to end," he said. "The military coup has to be reversed. I mean even if that takes a couple of more months or even a year. We're not going to leave here. They have no other option. They really don't have another option."
