PURI: Spelling out his success mantra, Gujarat chief minister and BJP's poll campaign chief Narendra Modi on Tuesday asked BJP workers in Puri to go to the people at grass-roots level and point out the failures of the Congress government at the Centre and of the BJD government in Odisha.
He asked his party colleagues to prepare a booklet of charges highlighting corruption, nepotism, poor governance and other wrongdoings of the two parties and take it to the people.
Modi was speaking to party workers at the end of his day-long schedule that included a visit to the Jagannath temple and meeting Gajapati king Dibyasingha Deb and Sankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati. "You have to usher in a wind of change and trigger such a public pulse that people will start hating the BJD and the Congress," he told party workers. "The booklet of charges should reach every household."
The BJP is virtually in tatters in the state since the BJD-BJP split prior to the 2009 elections.
The Gujarat CM said the creation of an anti-BJD or anti-Congress wave alone would not help. "You need to develop a killer instinct, and have firm determination and self-confidence," he said.
He gave a patient hearing to party leaders and activists, who narrated the misdeeds of the BJD in Odisha and the UPA at the Centre. Asked how to fight the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD in the state, Modi said BJP workers needed to work together and stand united to defeat opponents.
Modi advised them to be tech-savvy and asked them to use social-networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter for reaching out to the common people. "You have to keep yourself updated," he said. "Through social media, you can get a lot of information on party activities taking place in Delhi and other places." Modi said the BJP's state unit should start a radio service in Odia to spread the party's messages in rural areas.
Asserting that "strong public relations" is the passport to success, Modi said he had adopted the same tactic in Gujarat. "Our activists regularly visit every nook and cranny of Gujarat, listen to people's problems and try to resolve the issues," he said. "BJP workers in Odisha should follow suit. They should venture into villages to spend time with people and tell them how the BJD and the Congress failed to fulfil their promises in the past."
Modi asked the party's state leadership to organize at least 1,000 meetings in remote villages by the end of September. "Hold meetings and organize ansans (fasting) on different issues to rattle the opponents," he said.
BJP leaders, who were in an upbeat mood following the Gujarat CM's visit, said they would definitely execute his instructions. "We will not let down Modi," said BJP leader Jayanarayan Mishra.
BJP state president K V Singhdeo said: "Modi will come to Odisha again in October and address party leaders in Bhubaneswar."
