PATIALA: Besides saving dozens of Indian youths from the gallows, Punjabis residing in Dubai are performing another humanitarian job — organizing blood donation camps in the month ofRamzan as voluntary blood donation generally decreases during this month in Dubai.

Noted Dubai-based Punjabi philanthropist S P S Oberoi, who was here to participate in the South Asian Punjabi Conference, said the Sarbat Da Bhalaa Trust there was organizing 4-5 such camps to meet the demand for blood during the Ramzan month.

"Most natives are reluctant to donate blood during Rozas since they observe fast during the entire month. Hence, to serve the nation in which we are residing, we have come forward to organize voluntary blood donation camps of Punjabis every week during Ramzan month," said Oberoi, president of the trust, who was instrumental in saving dozens of Indian youths from gallows by paying blood money.

He said the effort of Punjabi community there has been widely appreciated by Dubai authorities.

"We started this practice last year. Around 600 units of blood were donated by Punjabis in such camps," he said, adding that the Punjabi community in Dubai contributes around 1,200-1,300 units of blood each year.

Oberoi said Punjabis in Dubai had achieved another landmark by organizing a camp where only Punjabi women had donated blood. "Around 160 Punjabi women had turned up to donate blood in the camp and about 50 units were collected in the camp," he added.
