NEW DELHI: Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde was on Tuesday evasive when asked about security arrangements made ahead of a decision on Telangana.

"The issue has been pending since 1956. The matter is before the Congress working committee. It may take a decision or not take a decision. Where is the question of any security arrangements," he said, hours before the crucial CWC and UPA coordination panel meets to decide the fate of Telangana.

Shinde's observation comes even as the Union home ministry has sent additional paramilitary troops to Andhra Pradesh — some 1,000 personnel were despatched on Saturday — to handle any law and order exigency in anticipation of a decision on Telangana. This is in addition to the 2,500 troops given earlier to the state, most of which have now been deployed at sensitive towns across Rayalaseema. The Centre has also kept a deployment chart ready, giving details of where to pull out the troops from before diverting them to Andhra in the event of an emergency.
