If I had known that the players were involved in spot-fixing, I would not have put them in the playing eleven," Rahul Dravid said.
NEW DELHI: "I was hurt when I heard the news of players from my team — S Sreesanth,Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan — being involved in spot-fixing during the IPL matches."
This is what former Rajasthan Royals captain Rahul Dravid had to say when Delhi Police went to his residence last week to record his statement. He also told the special cell cops that "if he had any idea about the activities of these players, he would not have selected them in the playing eleven," a senior special cell officer told TOI.
Delhi Police recorded Dravid's statement last Wednesday. Dravid said he, along with coach Paddy Upton, took the final call on who should be included in the playing eleven for a particular game. "The selection happened on match-to-match basis depending on the weather conditions, requirement of a particular player on a particular pitch and keeping other aspects in mind. If I had known that the players were involved in spot-fixing, I would not have put them in the playing eleven," Dravid said.
Delhi Police has also approached Paddy Upton for recording his statement but he is presently in South Africa, while statements of CFO, CEO and other functionaries of Rajasthan Royals have already been recorded. Dravid's statement has been recorded under sections 161 of CrPC, which makes him a prosecution witness and if required during trial, he might also be called to the court for deposition.
Delhi Police asked Dravid questions about the team's selection process, the criteria for selection when nit came to the arrested players, whether there had been any suspicions in the team management about their activities and whether loose deliveries given by them (arrested players) and intentions behind those deliveries were noticed by him (Dravid), or any action taken. Sources say Dravid denied having any knowledge about players' suspicious act of spot-fixing.
Delhi Police decided to record his statement at his Bangalore residence instead of calling him all the way to Delhi. Officials say Dravid's role was never under suspicion. With the special cell recording the RR captain's statement, the case against Sreesanth, Chandila and Chavan will be strengthened in court, said officials.
