NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave "in-principle" approval to the proposal to set up a rail tariff regulator mandated to suggest periodic revision in passenger and freight rates.
The ministerial panel, however, deferred a final decision on setting up of the regulator because of a rethink whether a legislative route was needed. There was a feeling that much of the proposal could be accomplished through an executive order.
The proposed rail tariff authority, which will have five members from different fields, including chairman railway board, will decide the fares after due consultation with stakeholders, citizen groups and consumers.
