Why can’t we take NO for an answer?

The recent incident wherein a Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, student stabbed a girl before killing himself has sent shock waves across the country.

Reports suggest that the boy took the step after allegedly being rejected by the girl.
With the growing instances of attacks on girls, over matters of heart why is it that some men just cannot take a 'no' for an answer.

Lawyer Flavia Agnes holds the male ego responsible for such dastardly acts. "Whenever a man is rejected, his male ego gets bruised and he resorts to such methods to get back. Such men think they are heroes. It is sad how girls are treated as commodities," said Agnes.
The recent film, Raanjhannaa, starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, traced the life of a lover, who was crazy about a girl since childhood and also stalked her. Though the film fared well commercially, it raised multiple questions about the mindset of Indian men and their attitude towards women.

Director Aanand L Rai reasoned, "We cannot generalize men. In my film, at a certain point, Kundan (played by Dhanush) understands his mistakes and goes to Delhi to help Zoya (Sonam) to overcome his guilt and hence he plays a character one can associate with. But as far as the JNU episode goes, I think the boy had serious psychological issues and his was an exceptional case. It is perhaps the upbringing of a person that leads one to be so revengeful."

Actress Divya Dutta, who has been a part of many youth-centric films, added, "We need to deal with failed love affairs more maturely and resort to guidance to deal with such instances."

Ashish Shukla, coordinator of Stop Acid Attacks, an online campaign, believes that this kind of behaviour stems from inequality. "The society has been massaging the male ego since times immemorial. Inequality begins from home where a boy is given preferential treatment over a girl. Until we stop such indifferences, these attacks won't stop," says Shukla
