While the instant coffee takes away the additional workload with its ease of preparation and sourcing the ground coffee powder, filter coffee equally makes coffee drinking process a pleasurable exercise. Here's a step-by-step guide to go about the filter coffee.
Where to source the coffee powder from?

Availability? It's a good question. But a little legging would give you good results. While Cafe Coffee Day and Barista stock a range of coffees taking from the regular ones to the exotic stuff like coffee Arabica et al, you can always find an alternative - rather a cost effective alternative in the coffee powder that many Kerala stores in cities. Big Bazaar stocks Bru filter coffee powder in many of its outlets also.

Choosing the coffee filter

From less expensive coffee filters to expensive ones, the options are plenty to choose from. These come in different sizes and capacities. So based on your need and quantity of consumption, you need to buy one. So if the total household consumption of coffee is about 5-6 cups, then go for a filter which has about 150ml decoction storage capacity - in short, a small one.

The procedure

The coffee filter consists of two chambers - the upper chamber and the lower chamber. The upper chamber is the one where the coffee powder is to be put before adding water. It is a perforated container.

a. Take the entire set. First put 2-3 spoons for coffee powder (heap full) in the upper chamber.

b. Cover the powder up with the perforated distributor which is used to control the flow of water.

c. Now, boil water in a separate vessel and pour it in the upper portion. Fill the water almost to the brim. Cover it with the lid. Allow the decoction to settle down in the lower chamber. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes for the entire filtrate to collect.

d. In a cup, pour one quarter of the decoction and add milk. If you want to make a light coffee, you can take three equal portions of milk, water and coffee decoction. You can heat the coffee in the microwave and relish freshly prepared coffee
