Restaurant review: The Pasta bar Veneto
Restaurant Review: The Pasta bar Veneto

I like places that make a statement with their decor, and Pasta bar Veneto does. The branch on Burkit Road is an Italian restaurant literally living in a glass house.

Decor

It has a beautiful tree in the centre courtyard that people can sit in on a cool day. White rustic walls hold framed pictures and decorative plates. On a weekday, the restaurant is lonely. And it should not be, considering it is in the middle of a busy area and offers diners a quiet corner to sit, unwind and chill out, if all you desire is sandwiches and a cup of tea to go with mellow introspection, or a bit of gentle romance.

Pasta bar Veneto's menu is interestingly put together, with quirky facts about Italy, Rome and where all the money gathered at the Trevi Fountain goes.

Food

One look at the menu and I know what I'm going to order. Straight away I tuck into some Bruschetta al Pomodoro, and love the crunchiness of the toast with cool diced tomato, basil, olive oil and the slight flavour of garlic. Another nice but rather common starter comes looking like ordinary golden fried lumps on a plate. No prizes for guessing: it is Cheese Jalapenos. Perfectly fine, if you are in the mood to eat something ordinary and hot.
On to the main course, I go in for Pesto Al Genovese, and am glad to find the spaghetti is nicely cooked. In the sense, each strand is separately coated with the green sauce, and is delicious. Then, I see they have Pesce alla Griglia and of course, I must have my fish. Turns out to be a great idea. The Basa fish is divine. And I mean it. It is succulent, well marinated, crisply grilled on the outside and golden brown. I eat it slowly, relishing every morsel, forgetting about the veggies and mashed potato.

Naturally I need to top all that food with dessert. This I leave to the waiter to decide. He brings out their signature Mud Pie with a secret smile on his face. Obviously, they are very proud of it, and it turns out to be just the thing I needed to settle my food down.

Of course, to add to my feeling of virtuousness, I sipped green tea throughout my meal.

Plus & minus:

The food wins. The Pasta bar Veneto is a nice place to sit down and think, and has the perfect ambience to go with.
