Dessert sauces and syrups make for an apt finishing touch for cakes, tarts and other sweet dishes. Try them out... 

Maple syrup: Considered one of the world's healthiest foods, maple syrup is an apt option for those watching their weight as it has fewer calories and is a source of zinc. 
Serving tips: Drizzle over pancakes, use as a topping on breakfast oats or ice-cream. 

Raspberry syrup: Boil some sugar, water and raspberries and simmer this liquid till it thickens. Pour this into a jar through a sieve and cool it in the refrigerator. 
Serving tips: It makes for a great addition to sponge cakes, mocktails and smoothies. Can also be used over waffles. 

Orange syrup: Quick to make, it adds a rich taste to desserts. Just boil orange juice, sugar, butter and salt and simmer. Whisk cold water and cornstarch in a small bowl, add this to the sauce. Also add some orange peel for taste. 
Serving tips: Goes best with almond cakes, figs and banana bread.
