Sunny Leone
TOI takes a look at the show that has courted as much trouble as fame
Bigg Boss is undoubtedly the most controversial show on Indian television. The TRP-grosser, which is in its seventh season right now, has had its fair share of controversies from the very outset. Only last week, the show received a legal notice for showing adult content, while a complaint was filed against it for hurting religious sentiments. The last season saw a PIL being filed against it for "sheer commercial exploitation of the National Anthem and hurting the sentiments of the citizens of India" when the now familiar baritone of Bigg Boss had asked movie-goers in New Delhi theatres to stand up for the National Anthem before the screening of a movie. Even the contestants haven't been spared, with many of them being at the receiving end of many a complaint. Here's a look at some of the cases that have plagued a show that everyone loves to hate.
Sunny Leone: Participation of a porn star
BJP MP Anurag Thakur had complained to the I&B Ministry through a letter to then I&B minister Ambika Soni and sought action against the channel for planning to feature porn star Sunny Leone in the fifth season. Thakur had said featuring an adult entertainer could have a negative impact on the audience, especially children. According to the MP, many parents were also averse to the idea. The producers, however, went on to include Sunny, who turned out to be quite an attraction on the show.
Salman Khan as the devil: Insulting religion
An activist, Hemant Patil, has filed a complaint at a magistrate court against the show's producers alleging that it has hurt religious sentiments in Season 7. Host Salman Khan and the production team have been named respondents. According to the complaint, the show's promotions had Salman posing as the devil holding a trident — Lord Shiva's weapon. The fact that the trident had bones tied to it irked the activists, who have alleged that this has hurt Hindu religious sentiments.
On-screen intimacy has been condemned: Adult Content
The show was served a legal notice by the I&B ministry for airing adult content like hugging and kissing in Season 7. According to the ministry, some of the content was not suited for "unrestricted public exhibition" and was in violation of the programming code under the Cable TV Act. According to reports, the ministry expressed concern regarding the contestants' language and Pratyusha Banerjee being given electric shocks on prime time.
Participants wearing turban: Hurting religious sentiments of Sikhs
A petition was filed by activist Gagandeep Singh Bhatia in an Indore court seeking legal action against the channel and the show for allegedly insulting religious sentiments of the Sikh community in Season 6. Bhatia sought legal action against host Salman Khan, contestant Navjot Singh Sidhu and the cast of Son of Sardar— Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha — for making women wear turbans, something not allowed by the religion.
Veena Malik: Un-Islamic and immoral acts
This one transcended borders. Pakistani actress Veena Malik's intimacy with Indian actor Ashmit Patel in the fourth chapter of the show landed her in trouble when a case was filed in a Lahore court by one Mian Muhammad Iqbal. He slammed the actress for "immoral and un-Islamic acts". Mian also wanted the police to register a case against her
