Restaurant review: Ginseng (Pan-Asian)
Pan Asian cuisines come together in a new menu at the Ginseng restaurant, Hotel Royal Orchid.
Decor
Named after the healing plant, Ginseng is located at the Hotel Royal Orchid adjoining the KGA Golf Course. Blue-and-white pillars and paper umbrellas converted into ceiling lights look down at the wooden floor. Elegant high-backed chairs and a choice of different-sized tables are convenient when going in a group.
Food
The new menu seems to be designed for the global diner and some of the earlier Indo-Chinese dishes have been deleted; what it now offers is quite a banquet. Vegetarians should try the all-time favourites — Crackling Spinach, Vegetables in Golden Basket and Wok-tossed Broccoli and Asparagus with Noodles. New offerings like Indonesian Sambal Udang Prawns, Gai Pad Grapaw (chicken with Thai basil) and Prawn Tempura dragon rolls are impressive. If you haven't had a good Singapore Hainanese Chicken Rice, this is the place to order one. Nasi Goreng was a welcome change from the usual fried rice. Don't forget to ask for extra helpings of their marvelous sauce, which is appropriately named 'Tango'. Round off your feast with their delicious Wasabi Ice cream.
Plus and minus
Plush ambience and an array of dishes from south east Asian countries make Ginseng a great destination. Limited choice of desserts is a downer.
