Restaurant review: Siam House (Thai)
The new emerging food hotspot of Kammanahalli has a Thai option now — Siam House.
Decor
A bright neon signboard beckons you to step inside, much like on the sidewalks of Bangkok. Interiors are not elaborate, yet very clean and pleasing. The picture frames that were hung alongside each of the walls were a mix of Thai food and culture. Anyone who is taller than five feet needs to watch out for those hanging lamps, lest you knock them with your head and send them swinging.
Food
Most of us have been to Thailand, if not to shop, then for the amazinglyfabulous food available there.
Now take a short trip to Kamanahalli's Siam House, which offers a full menu of Thai specialties. Soups are available with a choice of prawns, chicken or vegetables, ranging from `115 to `155. Our Tom Yum Prawn soup was a little toned down and we had to ask for chillies and Nam Pla sauce. We had heard praises about the quality of pork here and were not disappointed — the Pork Spare ribs and Chilli Pork were excellent and the meat was rendered well with the right mix of seasonings. The Lemon Grass Chilli Chicken was hot and had us sweating, but that's the way it should be. The Pad Thai with various ingredients, priced attractively ranging from `175 to `225, was a full meal by itself. Our favourite Thai dessert — Tub Tim Grob (water chestnuts and jelly in coconut milk) — could have been made better with thicker extract.
Service
Staff were polite and attentive, but could do with some more training.
Plus and minus
The pork section of the menu is excellent. It is debateable whether a restaurant should dilute the taste to suit its clientele's expectations. Siam house certainly seems to do that, at the cost of authenticity. But who cares when the diners are smiling and the average cost is affordable?
