MUMBAI: It may be off-season in Goa, but the August 15 weekend will see Mumbaikars landing in huge numbers at the popular beach destination. Air fares on the sector have shot up with very few direct flights available for Wednesday. Those who want to head abroad are booked for Thailand or Colombo. Experts said other popular destinations include Dubai and Singapore, which are reasonably priced, as of now.

A search through any of the travel portals would throw up reasonable fares for most domestic destinations on August 15 (when the long weekend starts) and August 18 (when the weekend ends). However, no direct flights are available for Goa even on a one-way fare of Rs 6,000. The few direct connections available are for Rs 7,500 and above. This means a return trip would cost a flyer Rs 14,000 on the cheapest fare selection. "People can easily take a threenight vacation during this weekend. Goa is ideal for such a trip," said Pradip Lulla, director , Cupid Travels.

Lulla said that travellers have also booked international destinations like Thailand, Colombo, Dubai and Malaysia. Other operators said that the proximity of these places make them viable for a short holiday. "These places are affordable and can be reached in a few hours from here. Return tickets to Thailand would cost around Rs 20,000," said a Fort-based agent. Similarly, Colombo and Malaysia are also priced between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000.
