CHENNAI: Hinduja Group company Ashok Leyland is not looking at expanding its presence in the auto component business and instead wants to focus attention on commercial vehicles and construction equipment instead. Unlike other automobile conglomerates like Mahindra &Mahindra or Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland will not add to its foundry business and will simply grow the diversifications that are already part of the group.

Said Dheeraj Hinduja, chairman, Ashok Leyland: "We invested in our foundry many years ago and for years it remained a captive unit. Now of course it is popular for a lot of OEMs and we in fact service nearly all the automobile OEMs in India. But we're not looking at focussing on auto components as a sector. Our core focus is on commercial vehicles," he added.

Apart from the company's focus on trucks and buses, Ashok Leyland will also map a strategy for its core diversifications - construction equipment and engineering. "We will also focus on adjacent business like construction equipment with John Deere and we're also restarting our finance company. We will also focus on our IT and engineering company and we will try and see how we can grow our defence sector business where we are a major provider of vehicles," said Hinduja.
