Jaganmohan Reddy quits Lok Sabha, his mother Vijayamma assembly
Political analysts said that the mother and son have timed their resignations well as Kiran’s popularity soared in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema after his emotional speech on the possible negative consequences of the division.

HYDERABAD: In a clever move to outsmart Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, YSR Congress leaders YS Jaganmohan Reddy and his mother Vijayamma on Saturday resigned from their legislative posts in "solidarity with crores of people who've hit the streets" fighting for a united Andhra Pradesh.

Political analysts said that the mother and son have timed their resignations well as Kiran's popularity soared in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema after his emotional speech on the possible negative consequences of the division.

Although they made it clear that they were not opposed to the division of the state, the issues they raised in an "open letter" is clear that they favour a united Andhra. The resignations, well thought-out, come at a time when the Samaikyandhra movement has gained momentum with ministers and senior Congress leaders, too, joining protests.

The resignations are also aimed at taking the wind out of the sails of opposition leader N Chandrababu Naidu, who broke his silence on the issue on Friday by writing a letter to the Prime Minister demanding that the Centre address all contentious issues including water, power, and Hyderabad, before forming the Telangana state.

Jagan and Vijayamma's USP in Seemandhra is their united Andhra stand. When they felt threatened by the change in the rigid stand of Kiran and Chandrababu, the mother and son hastened their decision to quit. In fact, they did not hide their real political intentions when they said in their open letter that it was high time other party leaders followed suit to keep AP united.

While Jagan, now in Chanchalguda jail, faxed his resignation letter through prison authorities to the Lok Sabha speaker, his mother Vijayamma sent the papers to the assembly speaker. With their resignations the YSRCP, which has two MPs and 17 MLAs, is no longer represented in the Lok Sabha and the assembly.

In another letter to the Congress leadership and the PM, Jagan and his group observed that the CWC and the UPA government had ignored the ramifications of the division. "Without looking into the reality, your unilateral decision has put our state in disarray and hope that our resignations would change your thinking process," they wrote.

Meanwhile, authorities at the Central Prison at Chanchalguda made arrangements to forward Jagan's letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker. "We are sending it today itself," a jail official said.

Hectic activity was noticed at the jail as party senior leader MV Mysoora Reddy met Jagan. Wife Bharati also spent more than one hour with Jagan. Several supporters also came to the prison when they got to know that he leader was quitting LS
