"We have decided to partner again. We have done well together," Ashwini said.
NEW DELHI: India's most successful doubles pair, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, will be seen in action together again. They shuttlers announced here on Tuesday that they would be renewing their partnership in October. The duo, who won the gold medal in women's doubles at the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010, confirmed that they would be playing together again. They had snapped the partnership after the Olympics in 2012.
"We have decided to partner again. We have done well together," Ashwini said on the sidelines of the unveiling of the IBL trophy. "Yes, we decided to get back together. However, it is unclear as to when we will actually play together," added Jwala. The icon players of all six IBL franchisees were present at the event. PV Sindhu, who recently won a bronze at the World Championships, made a brief appearance at the event. "It's going to be a good show. I hope everyone enjoys it," she said.
Hyderabad's icon player Saina Nehwal was pleased with the coverage IBL was getting. "I am happy that so many of the top players in the world are here."
"This league will help Indians to get to know top players from all over the world. Foreign players will get more recognition in India," said Delhi Smashers' icon star Gutta. When questioned about the controversy regarding the lowering of the base price of her and Ashwini just before the player auction for the league, she only said, "You'll have to ask IBL why they reduced our base price." Jwala said she was disappointed that women's doubles was not included in IBL.
"I think we need to change the attitude towards doubles.A lot of changes are needed. Doubles needs to be taken seriously." She also expressed her dismay at not getting any sponsors yet. "The sad thing is despite winning matches and medals, I still struggle to find sponsors.
