Restaurant review: Flurys (European Confectionery)
Restaurant review: Flurys (European Confectionery)
Kolkata's iconic tea-room at Park Street, Flurys (founded in the year 1927 by Mrs and Mr J Flury to cater to the elegant tea habits of their English brethren and the affluent Indian), marks its debut in Hyderabad, albeit, as an express kiosk counter at GVK One Mall. We are not complaining, especially when there are hushed talks about a standalone outlet soon.

Food
The confectionery list is comprehensive, including classics like Rum Balls (`65), Baba Cake (`50), Strawberry Cubes, Almond Cubes (both at `50) and Chocolate Boat. The rum ball is a riot, with just the faintest hint of rum adding the right tipsy touch to oodles of creamy chocolate. Strawberry (and almond) cubes, as well as baba cake are absolutely melt-in-the-mouth too.

There are croissants, shortbreads, cinnamon rolls and freshly baked bread (milk, masala, garlic etc), cookies (pistachio fingers, double chocolate chips, cantucci, chocolate Bretzels, cherry Swiss) and chocolates (truffles, dark, white etc) in gift packing or even smaller pouches. Designer cakes (Single Origin, which uses Ghana chocolate, Vanilla Dream, Strawberry Desire etc) can be ordered at `1200 per kg onward.

While the famed English breakfasts (bacon-fried egg-sausages genre), "heritage tea sandwiches", omelettes and English tea in a pot are missing, (obviously due to space constraints), savouries like Spinach and Corn Quiche (`50), Chicken and Mushroom quiche (` 50), Chicken and Capsicum Puff (` 55), Classic Chicken Patty (`55 and delish!) redeem the absence of the former.

Service
Brisk, efficient and friendly.

Plus & minus
Don't go looking for a tea room ambience, obviously, as it is in the spacious food court, although in a quieter corner. However, the bright pink and white awning, logo and packing lure you to their delectable fare, which can be carried away or had right there (grab a window seat nearby with your goodies, as you watch the traffic go by from the fourth floor).
