Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin are the top contenders for the role of Batman in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel sequel

This year's Comic-Con held in San Diego had a surprise up its sleeve for fans of DC Comics. Spokespersons of Warner Bros and DC Comics announced the first-ever on-screen faceoff between Superman and Batman at the convention, to be featured in the next Superman movie.

Now, buzz is that Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin are being considered for the role of Bruce Wayne. True Blood star Joe Manganiello, whom director Zack Snyder had earlier considered for the role of Superman in Man of Steel, is also a top contender.

Apparently, the Man of Steel sequel, to be produced by The Dark Knighttrilogy director Christopher Nolan, will show a more rugged Batman in his late 30s, to fit the bill of the superhero of Frank Miller's 1980 series on the Dark Knight Returns.

While The Notebook star Gosling is the most popular in the list of the potential contenders to play Batman, No Country For Old Men actor Brolin might beat Gosling in the race, given his association with Warner Bros.

As reported by a Hollywood daily, actors Richard Armitage, Max Martini and Matthew Goode are also being considered for the role of Batman in Snyder's film, slated for a 2015 release
