God has been kind to me: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
A still from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming release Ram-Leela, which stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, promises to follow in the footsteps of some of his previously acclaimed work. SLB, who turned producer in 1999 with the National Award-winning Salman Khan-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-Ajay Devgn starrer, 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', says, "I think God has been very kind to me."

The filmmaker has seen more ups than downs in his career. In 2002, Devdas — with Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Aishwarya — won accolades in India and abroad. This was followed by a National Award for Best Feature Film for Black, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji. Then, in 2007, he introduced Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor with Saawariya. And, in 2010, he garnered critical acclaim for Guzaarish, which had Hrithik and Aishwarya.

The other films backed by his production house in recent years includeMy Friend Pinto (2011), Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi (2012) — it marked the debuts of his sister Bela Sehgal as director and choreographer-director Farah Khan as actor — and the blockbusterRowdy Rathore (2012) with Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha.

Interestingly, he has dabbled in theatre and TV too. Padmavati, the French opera, directed by him, ran to packed houses at Theatre du Chatelet a few years ago. And, earlier this year, he launchedSaraswatichandra on TV. Bhansali is now looking forward to his future projects — Gabbar, an action-entertainer starring Akshay Kumar and Shraddha Kapoor, and the Mary Kom biopic with Priyanka Chopra. "I never worry whether my productions are mainstream or not. For me, it is about the joy of creating," he says.

Ram-Leela, produced by Eros International and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, releases November 15
