KOCHI: White shrimp prices have touched record levels in Kerala markets. Kerala shrimp processors and exporters are feeling the pinch as they source this variety also known as Vannamei mainly from the shrimp farms in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and process it here.

"Vannamei prices have gone up from Rs 350 to Rs 620 per kg over the last two months," said Mathew Joseph, managing director of Kochi-based online fish retailer Seatohome.com.

Exporters have attributed the price hike to strong demand for Indian Vannamei from the US against the backdrop of a widespread disease — early mortality syndrome (EMS) — in the shrimp farms of Southeast Asian countries. EMS was first reported in China in 2009, then in Vietnam in 2010 and Thailand in 2012.
