Hand drumming can alter your response to stress at a genomic level. Playing a hand drum engages the creative and intuitive right side of your brain, and shifts the pressure from the critical thinking left brain. 

So, after an intense day at work, the drum can physiologically relax and refuel you for the next day. Current research is now verifying the therapeutic effects of ancient rhythm techniques like hand drumming. A study conducted among 112 long-term healthcare workers in the US found that after six sessions of drumming, 46 per cent of the employees were in a happier frame of mind.

The figure increased to 62 per cent after six weeks of drumming. The process accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system, produces feelings of well-being and a release of emotional trauma. It doesn't matter if you pick up a bongo, tabla, djembe, daphli or dhol; drum therapy will alleviate stress faster than you can say 'beat it'!
