It is really hard not to like and respect Njeralathu Harigovindan. The 38-year-old percussionist from Malappuram district in central Kerala is by turns witty and profound on the phone, not unlike he was on the show The Dewarists on Star World.

Born to a temple musician father who did not believe in confining music to the upper castes and to the sanctum sanctorum and finally took it out of the temple walls, Harigovindan decided to further his father's mission after the latter died in 1996.

"My father was a bohemian who did not drink. Most people in Kerala are bohemians only when they drink," says the percussionist who has set up a school for music, where his father's edakka, a percussion instrument, holds the pride of place. About two years ago, he got a call from the producers of The Dewarists about being part of the show and jamming with fellow percussionist Karsh Kale and former guitarist of rock band Motherjane, Baiju Dharmajan.
