Mumbai: August 12 witnessed a record 5.04 lakh bookings being made through the e-ticketing website of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), surpassing the earlier one-day sales record set in March.

On March 1, 5.02 lakh e-tickets had been booked. Advance reservations for any train open 60 days before the date of its scheduled departure. The bookings done on August 12 can be attributed to the festive season after two months. While Vijay Dashmi falls on October 13, Bakri Eid and Diwali will be celebrated on October 16 and November 3 respectively.

Following criticism, IRCTC , which now books nearly 50% reserved tickets on the Indian Railways network, has improved its website's performance. Joint general manager (PR)PradipKundu said, "Last year (2012-2013), the average daily bookings were around 3.85 lakh, it has now reached 4.30 lakh. This translates into nearly nine lakh passengers and a daily transaction of more than Rs 37 croreIRCTC has increased the booking rate to 7,200 tickets per minute from the earlier capacity of nearly 2,000 tickets. We are augmenting the capacity to handle 1.2 lakh users at any point of time as compared to the existing 40,000 users. This is expected to be ready by early next year."
